Leaves are a rich source of nutrients for northen rivers. They don't last very long as decomposers go after them soon after they land in the water. Before long their disassembled nutrients are rolling to the Gulf of Mexico being recycled over and over again by organisms ranging from copepods to alligator snapping turtles (and, of course, lucky anglers).
